The story of Austin’s tech community is really the story of its people. Every coder, founder, investor, and dreamer who chose this city brought with them a spark that shaped the culture we know today.
At the Austin Technology Council, we’re proud to highlight these journeys. “Austin Tech Stories” are first-hand accounts of why people come here, what makes them stay, and how this city continues to inspire innovation and belonging.
Because Austin isn’t just where tech happens… it’s where tech has a heartbeat.

I moved to Austin in May 2006, two months after my fiancé (now husband) relocated here. I had been working in marcom for electric companies in Fort Worth, and it took me three months to find a job in Austin — although I landed in state government, not tech.
For several years, I held media relations and communications roles in state agencies, but I wanted more career growth and knew I needed to pivot. Tech felt like the right move in Austin. I enrolled in UT’s McCombs School of Business — a truly life-changing experience… Hook ’Em! — and over the next two years, I also changed jobs, led a team for the first time, sold a house, built a new one, raised a toddler, and had a second baby. My daughter was three months old when I graduated with my MBA.
In my final semester, I focused on breaking into the tech industry. I started at Emerson the Monday after graduation and spent the next three years there immersed in global technology, factory automation and Industrial IoT software. Since then, I’ve worked at four other tech companies: SailPoint, National Instruments, Dover and now Growth Acceleration Partners (GAP), where I’ve been for over three years.
Austin’s tech marketing community still feels fairly tight-knit — small enough that new connections often come with shared networks, former colleagues or ties to UT. There’s a collaborative spirit, and people are generous with insights and support. It’s a great environment for learning and growth.
While the industry has weathered talent shortages, layoffs and economic shifts, Austin remains a fantastic place to build both a career and a life. I see continued momentum ahead, fueled by global brands, innovative startups, strong VC support, and a growing, diverse talent pool.
From Monique Beacham, CEO BeachamMedia – Learn More Space
I first came to Austin drawn by its unique blend of creativity, innovation, and community. What started as a short stay quickly became home, because Austin has a way of welcoming people with open arms and inspiring them to bring their ideas to life. The city thrives on collaboration—whether it’s at a startup pitch night, a tech meetup, or a casual conversation over coffee, there’s always a sense of shared possibility.
Building a career here has been energizing because Austin offers the balance of a thriving tech ecosystem alongside a lifestyle that values culture, music, and nature. It’s not just about working in tech—it’s about being part of a community that celebrates diversity of thought and encourages people to pursue meaningful work. For me, it’s been an opportunity to contribute to projects that intersect sustainability, AI, and the future of work, while still enjoying the creative and entrepreneurial spirit the city is known for.
As I look ahead, I see Austin continuing to grow into one of the nation’s most dynamic tech hubs. The influx of talent and investment will certainly shape the industry, but what will set Austin apart is its ability to stay grounded in values of inclusivity, creativity, and community. The future of our tech ecosystem isn’t just about building companies—it’s about building solutions that matter to people’s lives, from sustainability to accessibility to innovation that uplifts.
Austin has given me the space to grow as a professional and as a person, and I’m excited to see how our community continues to lead with heart as well as with technology.
