Getting Involved in Austin

Getting Involved in Austin will help you build a career and business... but it also helps build the community. We need more civic-minded entrepreneurs who want to serve. The future of Austin depends on it.

Austin is a city built on creativity, collaboration, and community spirit. People move here for the innovation, the opportunities, and yes, the culture that makes this place feel different from anywhere else. But if you want to truly be part of Austin, and especially the Austin tech community, you have to do more than show up for the occasional event.

The truth is, no single organization can be “the whole” of the Austin community. Even within the tech sector, no one group can claim to represent all voices, all companies, or all opportunities. The Austin Technology Council is proud to play our role in convening leaders, fostering conversations, and supporting the growth of technology in our region. But we are just one piece of the puzzle. That being said, we need ambitious civic-minded leaders to help us grow to the next phase.

If you want to build real relationships and make an impact, the smartest move is to get involved with two or three organizations. Pick groups whose missions you believe in, whose members inspire you, and whose events and programs you will actually attend. This might mean joining ATC, participating in Austin Women in Technology, engaging with the Chamber of Commerce, contributing to industry-specific associations, or finding cause-driven nonprofits that align with your values.

Once you’ve chosen your communities, commit to them. There’s no quick fix to building a reputation or a meaningful network. It doesn’t happen in a month, or even in a year. It comes from showing up consistently, contributing ideas, making introductions, and bringing value to others without expecting something in return.

In Austin, we talk a lot about being a good neighbor… and that applies just as much in business as it does in our neighborhoods. A civic-minded leader doesn’t just ask, “What can I get from this group?” They ask, “How can I make this group stronger?” When you do that over time, your connections grow deeper, your opportunities expand, and you become part of the fabric of this incredible city.

So, if you’re ready to get involved in Austin, start now. Choose your groups, roll up your sleeves, and commit to the long game. The relationships you build and the contributions you make will shape not only your career, but also the future of Austin.
