SUMMARY:Microprocessors: From Transformative to Pervasive—and What’s Next
DESCRIPTION:Microprocessor technology has enabled us to transition from a world with only a small number of computers\, designed and used for specific missions and purposes\, to a world seemingly awash in microprocessors—in data centers and cloud computing facilities\, in laptops and smartphones\, in smart devices and game consoles in our homes\, in our cars and vehicles\, in urban infrastructure and sensors of all types\, and embedded in devices of all types—if you look (and count) closely enough. In fact\, the amazing technological devices are so common that we even throw them out\, when newer\, better\, cooler devices come along. What exactly are they\, and how did they become so essential and ubiquitous—and disposable? How are they designed and made—and where? Why are we seeing a global supply shortage now\, affecting availability and shipping times of computers\, consoles\, cars\, and more? What does the global supply chain really look like\, how fragile is it\, and what are the risks? What does this future of this technology look like\, how will it evolve\, and what may alter\, augment\, or supplant silicon microprocessor technologies?

SUMMARY:Promoting Equity in Tech\, with Tech\, and to Tech
DESCRIPTION:The technology sector is struggling with diversity and equity issues\, while many cities and communities are finding that access to technology—broadband\, devices\, training\, etc—is also inequitable among different socioeconomic and demographic groups. Are these issues getting better? If not\, why\, and if so\, what works? Are they related? Does not having access to tech promote/sustain inequities in the tech sector? Can technology itself be used to help identify inequities\, determine causes\, and help develop effective solutions to both issues? Join our conversation on these topics\, featuring Austin Urban Technology Movement President and CEO Michael Ward Jr\, Digi.city Founder Chelsea Collier\, and Austin Forum on Technology & Society’s Jessica Sager.

SUMMARY:Technologies for Fighting COVID-19 and Other Epidemics
DESCRIPTION:The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has had a sudden and tremendous global impact. The resulting disease\, COVID-19\, and the rapid spread (epidemic) has had a profound effect individuals and families\, schools and education\, businesses and operations\, government policies\, and society in general. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic in early March\, and the Center for Disease Control\, and governments worldwide at all scales have declared state of emergency/disaster and instituted policies to attempt to control the pandemic and reduce hospitalization and fatalities (already number over 10\,000). Social distancing\, quarantines\, and lockdowns play key roles in reducing exposure and slowing the spread\, but detecting cases\, predicting the spread\, determine treatments\, and developing vaccines are the realm of medical science—aided by powerful technologies. \nJoin us for this timely event as our experts explain viruses and epidemics in general\, the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19 in particular\, and then discuss how technology aid healthcare professionals\, epidemiologists and researchers in detection\, identification\, understanding\, treating\, and eventually preventing this disease—and future diseases.
