SUMMARY:Building Towards the Future City While Operating during Budget Shortfalls
DESCRIPTION:How do counties\, cities and towns deliver on the promise of Smart Cities while operating under budget constraints? This requires a framework to prioritize the key elements for maintaining progress on Smart City programs\, which should also serve to help our communities as they continue to struggle under COVID-19. This session will analyze recent data benchmarking US cities on IDC’s Smart Cities and Communities Maturity Model 3.0\, as well as predictions for technology transformations over the next five years\, to help city decision-makers think about their plans for technology investment in the near term\, while preparing for the future. \nThe Texas Smart Cities Series is a twice monthly online presentation from technology\, business\, government\, and education leaders sharing about their expertise and experience in smart cities technologies and practices. This online “lunch & learn” series is held on Zoom on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 12pm-1pm CST. The speakers include a variety of experts from local\, national\, and global smart cities professionals.

SUMMARY:TEXGHS @ SXSW 2021: Global Health Security Demo Day
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Global Health Security Innovation Consortium (TEXGHS) is launching the inaugural TEXGHS Global Health Security Demo Day as an official event of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Online 2021 conference. This event will highlight market ready technologies that are impacting the ability to prevent\, predict\, detect\, and respond to pandemic infectious disease threats. Participating companies will highlight innovations focused on community resiliency and recovery from COVID-19 and future health security challenges. \nEvent Format: The Global Health Security Demo Day will include a series of 60 minute sessions organized around specific health security challenges. Each session will include an opening panel followed by six minute presentations by companies describing their innovation and 30 minute interactive networking and question/answer following each session. \nSessions will include a number of global health security innovators\, public health policy thought leaders\, international organizations\, government officials\, philanthropists\, venture capitalists\, startup founders and CEOs\, prominent scientific researchers\, technology commercialization experts\, academic thought leaders and health professionals. \nRegistration: Registration is free for all registered attendees and does not require a SXSW badge. \nPlatform: Swapcard virtual event \nExpected Attendance: 500+ speakers and attendees\, including SXSW badge holders \nSpeakers: Global health security innovators\, public health policy thought leaders\, international organizations\, government officials\, philanthropists\, venture capitalists\, startup founders and CEOs\, prominent scientific researchers\, technology commercialization experts\, academic thought leaders\, and healthcare professionals \nAttendees: All those working at the intersection of technology and health security; entrepreneurs\, technologists\, startups\, funders\, NGOs\, technology investors\, scientists\, government representatives\, technicians\, healthcare professionals\, students\, international organization representatives \nWhat is Global Health Security? \nThe Sydney Statement on Global Health Security states that “Global health security is a state of freedom from the scourge of infectious disease\, irrespective of origin or source. It is achieved through the policies\, programmes\, and activities taken to prevent\, detect\, respond to\, and recover from biological threats… These threats know no borders and have global consequences requiring more effective collective action.” \nBackground \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has unequivocally demonstrated the extraordinary negative impact of pandemic infectious disease on humanity and vividly illustrates the need for a whole-of-society approach to fighting COVID-19 while preventing the next deadly outbreak. The technology innovation ecosystem response to COVID-19 has been unparalleled\, as a combination of mature companies\, startups\, entrepreneurs\, and researchers exploring commercialization have leveraged technology to support the public health leaders and health security experts confronting COVID-19. Public private partnerships focused on COVID-19 have led to an unprecedented pace of health security innovation in vaccine development\, diagnostics\, therapeutics\, and the many supportive technologies that enable efforts to prevent and respond to deadly infectious disease outbreaks. The TEXGHS @ SXSW2021 Demo Day will provide a forum to highlight global innovators and innovation ecosystem partners leading the fight against pandemics. \nTEXGHS @ SXSW 2021 \nTEXGHS @ SXSW Demo Day is an official event of South by Southwest (SXSW) 2021 virtual conference alongside TEXGHS participation in the SXSW Creative Industries Exhibition. SUMMARY:Texas Engineering TexTalks: Advancing Industry Through Innovation - Unlock Energy at Sea - Design of Offshore Platforms for Oil\, Gas and Wind
DESCRIPTION:For more than 100 years\, people have endeavored to unlock hydrocarbon resources beneath the sea. In the earliest days\, clever engineers used long piers jutting out into the ocean and lakes. Today\, energy is harvested from coastal locations to hundreds of miles from shore in water depths up to 3\,000 meters\, using fixed and floating offshore platforms. The evolution of technology and innovation in the design of fixed and floating offshore platforms has been integral to the success of the offshore energy industry. This talk will focus on the history of offshore structures and an introduction to the wide range of structural types and the skills needed to design\, build and install them. For further learning\, the University of Texas at Austin Cockrell School of Engineering Executive Learning program offers three short courses on offshore platform design\, as well as a new Fundamentals of Offshore Engineering Professional Certificate. To learn more\, see: \nFundamentals of Offshore Structures (FOS): https://executive.engr.utexas.edu/epd/fos.php \nDesign of Fixed Offshore Platforms (DFOP): https://executive.engr.utexas.edu/epd/fixed.php \nDesign of Floating Production Systems (DFPS): https://executive.engr.utexas.edu/epd/floating.php \nFundamentals of Offshore Engineering Professional Certificate Program: https://executive.engr.utexas.edu/epd/offshore_cert.php.

SUMMARY:Reverse-Engineering Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Organizations in various industries need engineers to step into leadership roles to help optimize project initiatives and outcomes\, while also driving innovation. However\, research demonstrates that engineers staunchly resist such roles because it conflicts with who they are and what they believe; “it’s just not who I am” is a common refrain. Oddly enough\, most\, if not all\, leadership skills and traits are already ingrained in an engineer’s existing skill set. Learning how to foster and kindle these skills to help promote better leadership qualities\, whether it be for personal gain\, to better manage team projects\, or strengthen higher-level position responsibilities are imperative to an engineer’s personal and career growth. \nThis series of 8 micro-courses provides participants with a roadmap to “reverse-engineer” their way into becoming an engineering leader by leveraging their analytical and technical skills to drive innovation\, optimize collaboration\, and improve team effectiveness. \nDesigned for the working professional\, earning micro-credentials and building on an existing skill set has never been easier. The Reverse-Engineering Leadership Micro-Course Series provides professionals with flexibility in advancing their skill set through a broad array of stackable credentials. At both a lower price point and shorter time commitment than other programs\, professionals can choose the number of micro-courses that best fit their needs\, and earn a micro-credential for each micro-course they complete. Display these individual micro credentials on LinkedIn\, or complete the whole series to earn a Reverse-Engineering Leadership Certificate. Your Reverse-Engineering Leadership learning journey is customizable to best fit your needs. \nWhat You’ll Learn \n\nUnderstand how to blend engineering skills with leadership qualities to help you evolve from a good leader to exceptional engineering leader.\nFlex your analytical/technical muscles to increase your level of influence and begin driving innovation in your organization.\nRecognize and begin to acquire the tools which will be essential in your upcoming roles and positions.
