The Data Architect performs highly advanced database design and analysis work. The data architect works with developers, database administrators and business analysts to design and model data structures for enterprise transactional and warehouse systems. May be involved in data analytics and BI efforts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Data Architecture Design, Development and Planning

  • Determines database structural requirements by analyzing business operations, applications, and programming; reviewing objectives with business; evaluating current systems.
  • Develops database solutions by designing proposed system; defining database physical structure and functional capabilities
  • Defines data and information architecture standards, policies and procedures for the organization, structure, attributes and nomenclature of data elements and applies them to technology projects.
  • Elicits data model requirements and develops logical and physical data models for new application projects and maintenance of existing data models and data architectures.
  • Designs data models of database structures that depict present and proposed systems, and develops policies and procedures designed to ensure the integrity of the agency data/database environment.
  • Elicits data requirements, and prepares and implements data models (including data dictionaries).
  • Map data sources and trace origins to enhance data lineage.
  • Plans migration to new database management systems and ensures that migrations are appropriately tested and validated.
  • Assesses future information requirements, and develops goals and objectives for the improvement and use of an efficient and cost-effective data system design.
  • Conducts research, investigations and assists in developing budgets for various data management and architecture solutions.

Data Architecture Implementation

  • Works with systems designers, developers, data modelers, data analysts and dba’s to develop data structures for data warehouses and data mart projects and initiatives
  • Works with systems designers, developers, data modelers, data analysts and dba’s to develop data structures to support data analytics and business intelligence systems
  • Works closely with database administrators to implement corresponding database changes to support new and modified applications.
  • Works closely with database administrators to ensure new designs conform to agency data standards and guidelines, and are consistent, normalized, perform as required, and are secure from unauthorized access or update.
  • Participates on and may lead special projects and committees.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and additional directly related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:

  • Six (6) years of full-time experience in database analysis, data modeling, data integration, data warehousing and data design.
  • Experience with enterprise data management technologies, including database platforms, ETL tools, SQL and data analytics platforms
  • Experience with Microsoft database technologies and software stack.
  • Experience with ER/Studio Data Architect or a comparable data modeling tool.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio or other comparable flowcharting software.
  • Experience in computer programming.
