SUMMARY:Insperity Business Resiliency Series Session 13 – Vaccines and the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:The public/private partnership between the US government and some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers has resulted in multiple COVID-19 vaccinations\, each showing tremendous effectiveness in early clinical trials. Now\, with vaccine distribution plans being developed and rolling out\, questions now arise around the employer’s responsibilities when it comes to encouraging\, or even mandating\, employee vaccination. Is a mandate even possible? What about reasonable accommodations? How do we navigate a situation that is updating in a real time\, and do so in a way that protects your employees\, your customers and the long-term health of your business? \nJoin Insperity’s Fernanda Anzek\, Insperity’s Director of Human Resource Operations and Andy Ramzel\, Vice President\, Property and Casualty Services for an important session that will unpack the most recent governmental guidance and explore some of the potential pitfalls associated with this emerging topic.

SUMMARY:TexTalks: Bioinspired ideas for Sustainable Separations
DESCRIPTION:Membranes are rapidly becoming the fastest growing platform for many process applications in water treatment\, process industries\, pharmaceutical manufacturing and food processing. This talk will present ideas for bioinspired separations that could enable difficult separations while reducing the impact on the environment by reducing energy input\, both embedded and operational. All synthetic membranes (and indeed most separation processes) have selectivity-permeability tradeoffs\, i.e. if a membrane has high permeability\, it will have a lower selectivity between two solutes or between a solute and a solvent. In molecular separation dense membranes\, separation is due to the mechanism of solution-diffusion through a wide distribution of free volume elements which is responsible for the trade-off. A simple solution\, in concept\, to such a challenge is to do what nature does – design precise angstrom to micron scale pores or free volume elements with no polydispersity. We will discuss bioinspired ideas\, and its realization in our lab\, and possible applications of such an ideal membrane based on biological protein channels and artificial channels that mimic their structure. We will also describe an ongoing project in our lab to create interfacially polymerized channel-based membranes for highly selective gas separations and other applications.

SUMMARY:Technology: The Power & Potential to Enhance Human Relationships
DESCRIPTION:While technology is universally credited for enhancing human productivity\, it is often knocked for its real and alleged negative impact on human relationships and even mental health. The pandemic era has reminded of the value of technology for communications among friends\, family\, and colleagues\, but even so there is a feeling that technology is at best a poor substitute for other ways of we enhancing human relationships. \nIn this presentation\, we will share some of the many ways in which technology plays positive roles in developing and sustaining human relationships of all types: from dating and romantic relationships\, to friendship and family relationships\, to business and coworker relationships\, to supportive relationships for those steering from isolation\, loneliness\, difficult social conditions\, or even rare medical conditions. \nTechnology can empower humans\, even in myriad types of relationships. How can it be used most effectively? How will future technologies address current challenges and issues and further enhance human relationships? We’ll talk about everything from smartphone dating applications to virtual environments and holograms and whatever future technologies companies may provide to enhance our human relationships.

SUMMARY:Variants\, Vaccines\, and the Future of "Pandemic Tech"
DESCRIPTION:One year ago\, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus a pandemic and the US declared a national emergency. In a year\, we used technology to sequence the virus\, develop tests\, and create vaccines and treatments in record time and scale. However\, the virus has also evolved — we’re not out of the woods yet. \nIn this presentation\, UT Austin professors Ilya Finkelstein and colleagues will share exactly where the pandemic is in terms of vaccine and therapeutics\, how science and technology have helped create the treatments rapidly (and their role in it!)\, how to understand effectiveness and risks\, what virus variants we are seeing now\, and what the next steps are in using data\, science\, and technology in identifying and addressing SARS-CoV-2 variants and future pandemics. \nSARS-CoV-2 == virus\nCOVID-19 == disease caused by the virus

SUMMARY:Reverse-Engineering Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Organizations in various industries need engineers to step into leadership roles to help optimize project initiatives and outcomes\, while also driving innovation. However\, research demonstrates that engineers staunchly resist such roles because it conflicts with who they are and what they believe; “it’s just not who I am” is a common refrain. Oddly enough\, most\, if not all\, leadership skills and traits are already ingrained in an engineer’s existing skill set. Learning how to foster and kindle these skills to help promote better leadership qualities\, whether it be for personal gain\, to better manage team projects\, or strengthen higher-level position responsibilities are imperative to an engineer’s personal and career growth. \nThis series of 8 micro-courses provides participants with a roadmap to “reverse-engineer” their way into becoming an engineering leader by leveraging their analytical and technical skills to drive innovation\, optimize collaboration\, and improve team effectiveness. \nDesigned for the working professional\, earning micro-credentials and building on an existing skill set has never been easier. The Reverse-Engineering Leadership Micro-Course Series provides professionals with flexibility in advancing their skill set through a broad array of stackable credentials. At both a lower price point and shorter time commitment than other programs\, professionals can choose the number of micro-courses that best fit their needs\, and earn a micro-credential for each micro-course they complete. Display these individual micro credentials on LinkedIn\, or complete the whole series to earn a Reverse-Engineering Leadership Certificate. Your Reverse-Engineering Leadership learning journey is customizable to best fit your needs. \nWhat You’ll Learn \n\nUnderstand how to blend engineering skills with leadership qualities to help you evolve from a good leader to exceptional engineering leader.\nFlex your analytical/technical muscles to increase your level of influence and begin driving innovation in your organization.\nRecognize and begin to acquire the tools which will be essential in your upcoming roles and positions.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Evolving Crisis and the Potential Impact on Your Small Business
DESCRIPTION:We live in what feels like unprecedented times. Severe upheaval and dislocation in the systems and structures that have held society together are causing them to come apart in front of our very eyes. It is everywhere. In government and politics\, our education systems\, the environment\, science and medicine\, business\, and the economy\, even the arts and entertainment. \nHowever\, despite what is seemingly all chaos and disorder\, it is not. \nThere is an order and sequence to events that underlies U.S. history – a pattern that occurs over and over in the same cycle and can be traced back in the country’s earliest history. Just like the seasonal progression of winter\, spring\, summer\, and fall\, history has four turnings that occur sequentially in an 80-100 year epoch. We are at the end of this hundred year era\, which culminates in a Crisis in which everything comes undone and is remade. It has all happened before and\, while these times are not unprecedented in our history\, they are unprecedented for you. \nThis webinar is the first in a four-part Thought Leader Series in which we will examine different aspects of how this new season will impact your business. The series will feature subject matter experts to discuss how to identify the most advantageous markets for your company during these unpredictable times\, the type of liquidity which is most advantageous to maintain\, how to position your company to identity both opportunities and threats and how how to train your management team to deal with this new environment. You will leave with context and tools to assist you in navigating through all the turmoil and restructuring while positioning your business for success now and in the coming season\, in which many incredible opportunities will emerge. \nAs an added bonus for those that register by Monday\, March 1\, 2021 – vcfo will be sending you a copy of the book The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy by William Strauss and Neil Howe.* \n*Reading the book is NOT a prerequisite.*
