SUMMARY:Smart(er) Cities: At the Intersection of People\, Data & Devices
DESCRIPTION:The topic of smart cities is characterized by complexity. From a technical perspective\, a smart city involves everything from devices to data to cloud and network infrastructure. Layered on top of this is the complexity of urban living and the mounting challenges of our modern society. Our city experience involves everything from how we get around\, to how we access city services\, to how we connect to the Internet\, to how we engage with our elected officials. Equity issues are highlighted when these services are accessible for some\, but not all. Smart cities have the potential to make amazing contributions\, but there are important issues to resolve including data privacy/ownership\, public-private partnerships and infrastructure resilience just to name a few. As overwhelming as this topic is\, one aspect is very simple – smart cities are about solving challenges for people\, not just about technology. Join us as we dive into the issues\, sort the complexity and showcase projects that are producing tangible results in this fascinating space.

SUMMARY:Why Growing Tech Companies Need a Sales Tax Strategy Now
DESCRIPTION:Tech companies may shoulder the most complex sets of rules for sales and use tax management. All states have now passed economic nexus laws which require tech companies to collect tax based on the level of sales made into the state. Compliance is more complicated and costly for licensing fees\, software as a service income\, and product sales revenues. \nJoin the Cherry Bekaert Sales Tax Team as they walk through practical examples of sales tax issues our technology clients are facing and provide a guide for improving sales tax compliance\, while reducing risk and exposure for unpaid taxes. \nYou will learn about: \nThe impact of economic nexus on sales and use tax obligations for technology companies\nThe increased scrutiny on sales tax in tech company M&A\nThe difficulties tech companies face in complying with sales tax collection requirements\nBest practices to manage increased compliance burdens and mitigate liabilities for uncollected sales tax

SUMMARY:Promoting Equity in Tech\, with Tech\, and to Tech
DESCRIPTION:The technology sector is struggling with diversity and equity issues\, while many cities and communities are finding that access to technology—broadband\, devices\, training\, etc—is also inequitable among different socioeconomic and demographic groups. Are these issues getting better? If not\, why\, and if so\, what works? Are they related? Does not having access to tech promote/sustain inequities in the tech sector? Can technology itself be used to help identify inequities\, determine causes\, and help develop effective solutions to both issues? Join our conversation on these topics\, featuring Austin Urban Technology Movement President and CEO Michael Ward Jr\, Digi.city Founder Chelsea Collier\, and Austin Forum on Technology & Society’s Jessica Sager.
