SUMMARY:Using Data & Technology to Improve Our Racial Climate
DESCRIPTION:Awareness of racial injustice\, discrimination\, and inequities has soared in the US recent months\, motivated by the tragic killing of Black Americans—including George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and many others. This has created a wave of social protests and calls for change\, from reforming police departments to removing symbols of the Confederacy to increased investment in Black businesses and more. \nThere is much work to be done to achieve the goals of the United States of America—that every person is treated as equals and have access to the same opportunities. This is a societal issue\, but can data and technology help us? There are notable examples of technology being used to discriminate and persecute\, in the US and globally\, and of data that clearly shows inequities and injustices \nHow do we use data and analytics to make things better? How do we ensure that technologies use to promote equality and fairness and not to enable injustice and discrimination? \nJoin our distinguished panel of experts as we discuss how data and technologies have been used for injustice and inequality\, but how they can be powerful tools for change\, equity\, and progress.

SUMMARY:VR: "Data Security When Your Data Travels More Than Your Employees"
DESCRIPTION:Hop on a virtual roundtable with ATC and HOPZERO to discuss an innovative security technology that keeps vital data inside your SMB or enterprise-sized business network. \nBusinesses of all sizes have been forced to move their data to the cloud with a quick turnaround. There are companies who have been on the cloud and worked with distributed teams for years. They might see the rest of the business world and say\, “Welcome. You have arrived.” \nEither way\, the switch has put a new spin on the conversation about data security for all types of situations. According to DigitalGuardian\, the average cost of a data breach was $8.19 million and it will increase exponentially now that Americans are accessing and sharing data on home networks and working remote full-time. \nBill Alderson will walk business leaders through using the nature of data dissemination to keep sensitive data in your network and away from hackers. Join us Thursday\, August 6 at 11:00 AM. \nSpecial thanks to our speaker and sponsor: \n \n\nBill Alderson\, HOPZERO CTO & Founder

SUMMARY:Achieving Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in Tech
DESCRIPTION:In this special second event on the topic of social justice\, equity\, and diversity (following our event on August 4)\, we will address how and why technology companies can be be drivers of change in social justice\, equity\, and diversity—and why this will be good for their own success (products\, services\, profits\, and more) as well as society. \nTechnology now enables and empowers most companies and organizations\, and most of us as consumers\, learners\, etc.\, fueling growth in the technology sector. The COVID-19 pandemic has further increased our dependence on technology. However\, the concurrent focus on social injustice in the US has shined a light on the lack of diversity and equity in the tech sector andI on the inequitable access to technology (broadband\, computers\, smartphones\, affordable connectivity\, etc.). \nOur panel of experts will show data on these inequities\, then are how tech companies can lead the charge in promoting diversity and equity in the workforce and proving technology accessibility to all people. Please join us and share your own thoughts\, experiences\, and suggestions in the important forum.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a half-day virtual workshop! \nTo remain competitive in today’s fast-paced\, digital world\, your business needs to adopt technologies that enable you to innovate and scale. Kubernetes has become the choice solution for teams looking to deliver modern cloud native applications while decreasing cost and optimizing resources. However\, learning and managing Kubernetes while navigating the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) landscape of projects can be a significant challenge. \nD2iQ offers this complimentary hands-on workshop enabling you to get up and running on Kubernetes with simple installation\, scaling\, and management of the platform–on any infrastructure. Leveraging D2iQ’s Konvoy\, a cloud native distribution of Kubernetes with the best of breed open-source projects from the CNCF\, this workshop will provide a foundation for how to reliably deploy and operate production-ready Kubernetes. This workshop is a great primer for all levels and covers everything you need for implementation and planning for day two. \nWHAT YOU WILL LEARN\n\nAn introduction to Kubernetes and the CNCF Landscape (Cloud Native Computing Foundation)\nHands-on installation and lifecycle management (scaling\, upgrading) of the Kubernetes cluster\nHow to deploy and expose Kubernetes applications using an ingress controller (Layer 4 and Layer 7)\nLeverage persistent storage in Kubernetes using Container Storage Interface (CSI)\nApplications on Kubernetes – Helm\, Operators\, and KUDO\nObservability of Kubernetes Cluster and Services with Prometheus\, Grafana\, Elastic and Kibana\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND:\n\nDevOps and Site Reliability Engineers\nInfrastructure Architects\nIT Managers\, Application Architects\, DevOps\nLeaders/Operators\n\nREGISTER HERE\nhttps://info.d2iq.com/20-08-25-VE-Konvoy-Workshop_Reg-Page.html

SUMMARY:Texas Engineering TexTalks: Advancing Industry Through Innovation Webinar with Eric Bickel on "COVID-19 - What is the data telling us?"
DESCRIPTION:Over the last six months\, we have witnessed policymakers grappling with how to respond to the spread of COVID-19 across the globe. In the United States\, policymakers at local\, state\, and federal levels have faced difficult decisions regarding the degree to which citizens should interact with each other\, how much of the economy should be curtailed\, and how to allocate scarce testing and hospital resources. These decisions have been informed and guided by a set of epidemiological models. \nIn this talk\, we analyze the performance of the models used to forecast the spread of COVID-19 and relate differences in performance to differing modeling approaches and structures. For example\, some COVID-19 models are “bottom-up” and model the interactions between individuals and communities in detail (i.e.\, SIR models). While other models are “top-down” and attempt to capture the high-level dynamics of the spread. Some models include uncertainty\, while others are deterministic. Certain models are designed to inform policy decisions\, while others are meant to provide forecasts. \nWe compare the performance of these models to a simple (two-equation) model that we have used to forecast the spread of COVID-19 at the national\, state\, and local level. Surely large models with hundreds of equations backed by a team of experts should outperform a simple model that has three inputs and runs in Excel. As we discuss\, a few COVID-19 models do achieve this level of success\, but most do not. \nWe will discuss this apparent paradox and the implications for decision analysis.
