We first heard “sitting is the new smoking” at SXSW Interactive 2013. We also learned that 6 out of 10 adults in Travis County are obese or overweight – so much for a fit community. Plus, companies asked: “How can we hire, retain great employees and build a winning culture?”
Those revelations spurred our Austin-based nonprofit, HealthCode, to action in 2014. Our mission is to help empower people to live healthier lives, free from preventable diseases through programs such as April’s Million Mile Month: A challenge to engage individuals in their health through a fun, collective goal to achieve a million miles as a global community.
Over 40,000 people and 200+ organizations have participated – from the City of Austin and Retail Me Not locally, to Keller Williams and Dun & Bradstreet globally – achieving over 6 million miles of activity, with potential healthcare costs savings exceeding one million dollars!
Prompted by that participation, HealthCode now offers an event each quarter. Check them out here and start off 2019 with January’s iResolve. Plus join Mayor Adler, Judge Eckhardt, and others this April as we rally Austin to achieve a million miles for a healthy, more connected community.
PS: Like NPR or PBS there is no charge to sign up or participate.
